Buying a mirror online: What should you look for in terms of glass, quality, and finish?

Maj Wooden Arched Mirror 190x90 cm - Natural 2

Buy a mirror online

What do you look for in terms of glass, quality, and finish?

For many people, buying a mirror online feels a little different than picking one out in a store. You can’t hold it in your hands, turn it in the light, or see how it looks next to the wall you have in mind. And yet, more and more people are buying their mirrors online because there’s a wider selection, it’s easier to compare options, and the choice is ultimately a more informed one.

To do that, you need to know exactly what to look for—not just the picture itself, but what’s behind it: the glass, the frame, the finish, and how the mirror will still look great in a few years. Below, we’ll walk you through, step by step, everything you need to know before buying a mirror.

Glass Thickness & Safety

What makes a mirror truly high-quality?

When looking at a mirror, most people first notice the shape and then the color of the frame. That makes sense, because that’s what you see. But the quality of a mirror lies largely in something that’s less immediately obvious: the glass itself. At Nordic Style, we use only HD silver mirror glass —High Definition—which ensures a crystal-clear, completely true-to-life reflection, without the slight distortion or discoloration you sometimes see in cheaper versions.

The thickness of the glass is just as important. Thinner glass bends more easily, especially in larger sizes, and that creates a slightly wavy reflection that blurs your face or the room. Our mirrors come standard with 4 mm glass, and for larger models, that increases to 5 or 6 mm. That extra weight ensures stability and a clear reflection, even if the mirror is hung high on the wall or placed at an angle against the wall.

All Nordic Style mirrors are equipped with an explosion-proof safety film on the back. If the glass ever breaks, it will stay intact instead of shattering into pieces. Framed mirrors also have an MDF backing board for extra strength. For frameless mirrors, the adhesive film on the back serves the same purpose.

Aluminum or wood

The frame: a style that complements your interior

After the glass, the frame is the element that defines a mirror’s look. At Nordic Style, you’ll find two main materials: brushed aluminum and wood. Both have their own character, and the choice depends on your interior design as well as the room where the mirror will be hung.

Aluminum frames are lightweight, moisture-resistant, and therefore suitable for the bathroom. They are available in four colors: black, matte white, greige, and soft gold. Greige is a warm blend of gray and beige that blends effortlessly with Scandinavian interiors. Black creates a sleek, contemporary look. Matte white complements minimalist styles. And soft gold adds a warm, subtle accent.

Wooden frames are available in oak and pine. The oak versions feature an ultra-matte finish that allows the wood grain to show through without any sheen. The pine versions are untreated and have a lighter, airier feel that complements a pure Scandinavian aesthetic. All wooden frames are made from FSC-certified wood: for every tree that is cut down, a new one is planted.

Important to know: Wooden frames are not suitable for damp areas such as the bathroom. Only aluminum and frameless models are suitable for that purpose.

Sleek & Timeless

Frameless: When the Glass Itself Is the Design

When you choose a frameless mirror, you’re choosing understated elegance in the best sense of the word. There’s no border, no frame, and no color to draw attention. Just the glass, with a matte-polished edge that subtly completes the finish. Frameless mirrors blend effortlessly into any interior, making them particularly popular in bathrooms, minimalist living rooms, and modern office environments.

At Nordic Style, frameless models are available in virtually every shape: from the round Nea Frameless to the organic Hanna Frameless, from the arched Maj Frameless to the oval Lara Frameless.

For business customers or larger projects, custom frameless mirrors can be ordered in quantities of five or more by requesting a quote from our Dutch manufacturer.

Inspiration & Application

Shape and Use: Which Mirror Fits Where?

Buying a mirror online starts with a good assessment of the space—not just in terms of size, but also in terms of atmosphere. A narrow hallway calls for something different than a spacious bedroom, and an entryway with many architectural details calls for a sense of calm, while a minimalist bathroom benefits from a clean, defined shape.

  • Round mirrors (Nea collection) work particularly well above a sink, on a bedroom wall above a dresser, or as a focal point in a living room full of straight lines.
  • Arched mirrors (Maj collection) are larger in size and add a vertical dynamic to a room. A large arched mirror in the entryway makes a narrow space appear larger. Sizes such as 180×80 cm or 210×90 cm are ideal as full-length mirrors.
  • Organic shapes (Hanna collection) are fluid and asymmetrical. They bring a gentle sense of movement to the interior, which works well in living rooms or bedrooms where you’re looking for peace and balance.
  • Oval mirrors (Lara collection) combine the softness of a round shape with a slightly elongated silhouette, making them perfect above a sideboard or as an accent in the hallway.
  • Hexagon mirrors (Bernt collection) break away from the traditional round or rectangular shapes. Placing several of them side by side creates a surprising, graphic effect in the bathroom or entryway.

Size Guide

Choosing a size: Here's how to do it

One of the most common mistakes people make when buying a mirror online is choosing one that’s too small. In a photo, a mirror always looks bigger than it actually is because there’s no scale reference. An 80-cm-wide mirror can quickly feel modest in a spacious living room. A mirror that’s 125 cm wide or larger really makes a bold statement.

A handy rule of thumb: measure the width of the wall or piece of furniture where you want to hang the mirror, and choose a mirror that covers at least half of that width. A round mirror measuring 80 or 100 cm would look good above a 120-cm-wide sideboard. In a 90-cm-wide hallway, a slim mirror measuring 40 to 50 cm wide is a sensible choice.

For a full-length reflection, you'll need a mirror that's at least about 170 cm tall. The most popular sizes for full-length mirrors are 170×50 cm and 180×80 cm, both available as freestanding mirrors or for wall mounting.

Color & Experience

Choosing a color without seeing the mirror: the sample box

When buying a mirror online, color is the most challenging aspect. A frame color that looks light gray on the screen may suddenly appear cooler or warmer than expected in your home. Nordic Style offers a practical solution for this: the sample box.

It contains color samples of all the aluminum frame colors and the wooden mirror colors, as well as a small piece of polished mirror glass so you can feel the glass thickness and quality with your own hands. If you’re torn between two colors, this is by far the best way to decide.

Delivery & Service

How carefully is delivery arranged?

A mirror is fragile, and a large mirror is also difficult to handle. At Nordic Style, every mirror is delivered by a specialized carrier with experience handling fragile items. The carrier will contact you by email two days before delivery to let you know the delivery date and time slot so you can be home to receive it.

The mirror will be carefully packaged and delivered to the ground floor, behind the first door. Delivery is free in the Netherlands and Belgium, and most models have a delivery time of five business days if in stock.

In the rare event that a mirror arrives damaged, Nordic Style will exchange it. The carrier will deliver the new mirror and take the damaged one back at the same time—you don’t have to arrange that separately yourself.

Hanging & Care

Installation and Maintenance

Every Nordic Style mirror comes with a complete set of mounting hardware, including screws and anchors for concrete walls. There are clearly marked mounting points on the back, so you can easily determine where to drill. Here’s a handy tip: use painter’s tape to precisely align the drill holes in advance.

Larger mirrors can also be placed at an angle against the wall as freestanding mirrors. For added stability, Nordic Style offers an anti-tip kit, available in four sizes. It is suitable for framed mirrors, but not for frameless models.

As for maintenance: a dry viscose cloth is sufficient in most cases. If you want a little more cleaning power, use a mixture of water, cleaning vinegar, and a drop of dish soap. Harsh sprays or abrasive cleaners will damage the coating and leave a haze on the glass. Nordic Style also offers its own mirror glass cleaner for a streak-free result. For wooden frames: simply dust them regularly with a dry cloth.
